What Exactly Does a Reiki Practitioner Do?

At its heart, Reiki is based on the belief that “ki” or “qi” (universal life energy) flows through all living things. A Reiki practitioner isn’t the source of healing energy. Instead, they act as a skilled conduit, directing this universal life force energy to help restore harmony in your body and mind.

Think of a Reiki practitioner as a facilitator of your natural healing process. Their primary responsibilities include creating a peaceful environment for healing, assessing individual needs, and channelling energy through gentle hand placements either on or just above the body. They help clear energetic blockages and promote balance, working with your body’s wisdom to support healing.

To be truly effective, a Reiki practitioner embodies several key qualities: trust in their abilities as an energy conduit, patience to understand that healing unfolds at its own pace, acceptance of the practice without unrealistic expectations, compassion for themselves and others, persistence in maintaining their own practice, curiosity about energy and healing, mindful observation of experiences, and the courage to face challenges with responsibility.

What Can You Expect During Your Session?

If you’re new to Reiki, the process might seem mysterious, but it’s quite straightforward and deeply relaxing. Here’s what typically happens during a session:

Before Your Session: While there isn’t much you must do to prepare, some practitioners may suggest avoiding alcohol, red meat, heavily processed foods, and other substances for about 12 hours before and 48 hours after your session to support energy detoxification. Most importantly, please come dressed in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, as you’ll remain fully clothed throughout the session. Be ready to share any specific concerns, emotional stress, physical limitations, or health conditions you’d like to address.

During the session: Your session will begin with a brief consultation where you’ll discuss your needs and intentions with the practitioner. They’ll ensure the space is peaceful, often using soft lighting, soothing music, and sometimes aromatherapy to enhance relaxation. You’ll typically lie on a massage table or sit comfortably in a chair while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your head, limbs, and torso, focusing on energy centres called chakras. They’ll always respect your boundaries and avoid sensitive areas; you can also request a “hands-off” approach if you prefer no physical contact.

A complete treatment typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes, although shorter sessions may be available in healthcare settings. Your experience will be unique to you, but common sensations include feeling warmth or coolness from the practitioner’s hands, tingling or pulsations, seeing colours in your mind’s eye, deep relaxation that sometimes leads to sleep, or emotional responses as blocks are released. The best thing you can do is simply relax and allow the energy to work.

After Your Session: The healing doesn’t stop when the session ends. Reiki energy continues to work in your body for up to 48 hours after the treatment, supporting ongoing healing and detoxification. You might feel refreshed with increased mental clarity, notice improved digestion, or sleep more deeply. Some people may feel more tired than usual, which is considered a natural response to healing. Your practitioner may suggest drinking plenty of water to help ground yourself and may recommend follow-up sessions, typically every 4-6 weeks, for “energy maintenance.”
